Well, after the respite I'm back and ready to get posting all the things that I have backed up and never showed. I'm graduated and searching for work (have found bits and pieces but not steady yet). First this which was a spec piece for a book cover. I'm currently working on the actual cover which will be rather different. This is actually one of my more recent things.

Next up: my senior project pieces.

Two more days of class, working away at interning with Children's Theater(just sent off revised sketches!), and closing in on Graduation day!

One thing of note is that The Society of Illustrators LA Site is up for the Illustration West 48 competition. Which for my library piece was accepted for! You can check me out here in the student category. Navigate with the side scroll bar, I'm 4th down on the right under 'Certificates of Merit'. Check out some of the other work too, it is so exciting to see what illustrators are doing, and the work all looks amazing(hence why it's in the show).

The semester is over and I'm not sure what I'll be doing this Summer, I'm waiting to hear back on a few things, hopefully something works out. I am not in the finals for the Threadless competition but I wasn't really expecting to be. Next time!

Ode to Sans Serif

I just bought my first font! News Gothic, I'm using it in my independent study book.
I feel like a real designer and everything. It's rather exciting, my layouts are 90% finished and I'm doing fixes on the illustrations tonight. After I finish and scan it'll be technical fixes and printing trials!

Should be exciting, I'll be throwing up some pictures of my finals this week while everything is in progress. I've got a cut paper comic of the Little Mermaid that I'm incredibly psyched about. It's very delicate lines and is done in silhouette.

I should stop talking about my work and go finish it.

One of my finals for the book. I have 5 pieces final, 3 that I'm tweaking and 2 spots to finish.
I don't have a cover design yet but I do have a title. The goal is to have all images to finals by the 24th.
Then it's just printing and binding!
Well, after I do another layout pass...
In other news:

I finally read Local on Wednesday(and bought it on Wednesday for that matter)! It is divine and I can't believe I waited this long to read it. My lovely sister is responsible for making me aware of it oddly enough. It was going to be a Christmas present for her actually, but I couldn't find it in town and instead got her the collection of Fables covers(which is gorgeous).
So, sorry Megan, if you never ended up reading it then you can borrow mine now.
I also finally picked up Grey Horses by Hope Larson. She spoke at MCAD last year and I just adored her talk and filed her name away in the back of my brain and checked out her blog and whatnot. I was surprised how much I enjoyed Grey Horses, even though everyone had told me many times how lovely it was. I am always a bit behind when it comes to comics. alas.

Just one. From February, a variation on the theme of waterfalls. The first piece was more strict, here we could stray and experiment a bit more. I'll upload the first soon but this came out very complete and I finally archived it and added it to my portfolio.
On the portfolio front, I just sent an application in to American Greetings for their summer internship program. I overnighted it today because I am paranoid. I spent most of last night going over my resume and cover letter and tweaking the design and wording one last time. The portfolio is the easy part at this point. I'm incredibly happy with my work from this semester so far, I've figured out a few things I needed to and my work is much more consistent lately. All in all, I am really happy with my submission, it's a competitive program but I tried to put my best foot forward so I can hope!

I'm terribly excited to start Fom Hell, but I'm restraining myself for the moment, it or Raw Shark Texts will be my spring break reading. Or maybe both.

I'll have some exciting Illustrations next week though.

Everything has been moving too fast lately, since the semester began I've spent two weekends away (gathering up more 'oh god I'm stuck on a bus' hours than I need), gotten sick for a week, seen 2 films actually in theaters (an amazing feat I assure you) and made way too many illustrations.
But, becuase I've swtiched to cut paper/collage I have almost nothing to show you besides a large pile of paper litering my studio.

Swinging London

Second day of clases today, My semester is going to be fun. I have Illustration seminar(4), Comic 1, Illustration and Products, and an independant study where I will be designing and illustrating a book.

Cut Paper

So, in Tools of the Trade this semester I was exposed to cut paper as a medium.
I like it so much I used it again for my final. It's quick, arrangable, and a little addictive. I added some linework for my final and I'm very pleased with the result!

Two more days of class! This semester has flown by and I've made a lot of work I'm proud of. As long as my grades match up I declare this semester a win!

Little Mermaid illustration for my Illo 3 final. Mid-redo. My class had many things to say about it. Critiques tend to become free-for-alls on my work in this class. This time was no different. The illustration weird and imperfect. I wasn't expecting tons of praise or anything.
I like the weirdness, I'm taking the good advice and the things I had wanted to fix anyway (oh hello no hands) and fixing it up for next week.
The only thing different right now is the pattern in the back, I presented with a different pattern that was too large to work correctly. I also showed it without pattern for reference. It's a little boring with nothing. I feel this is working much better.

My digital process is fairly straightforward, but I know that when you don't do this kind of work it's little mystifying.

This is my original sketch. done in pencil, not to exact scale. The final had to be 6x16, this was drawn at about 4x9 and the proportion is wrong.

This is the scan of my inked final. The original sketch is blown up and adjusted to size, the proportion is a little different, and I decided to draw the people at a larger scale and then insert so they are not part of this sketch.

This was my starting point, because I have a tendency to overuse blue I knew I wanted a weird sky color for this. The berry/pink fit what I needed: fun, LA, and compatible with the T Mobile logo. It was a quick decision but one I really believed in. It helped shift my color palette in the right kind of way.

These are the individual scans of the figures, they also started in pencil but that is erased after they are inked. These are of varying sizes depending on how much detail I wanted.

What it looks like colored, but without background. People are added about 1/3 into the coloring process. It gives me a break from coloring and I had a better idea of where I wanted them by then. I spent about an hour sketching and scanning different characters before I found what I needed.

Finished product. I'll post my revision in a few days, after considering the critique I got, I'm going to lighten the background a bit, add more detail to the buildings, and possibly move around some colors.
Hopefully this was interesting.
For reference, it took about 8-9 hours of work from the inked sketch to final and about 3-4 from first sketch to the inked sketch. Art school does mean quick and easy. My coloring time is a little longer than it should have because I am out of practice and have been getting more precise about my work.

Most recent image, finished it late this morning. The assignment was illustrating a specific city for a promo brochure for T. Mobile. Not actually working with the company fyi.
As you can tell my city is LA (there were about 4 to choose from). It was pretty fun and I'm very pleased with the result. I had way too much fun doing the coloring.

More later, I have all my process work for this one since I colored and edited digitally, so I'll do a progression post like I always mean to but never do...

Junior Review

I had my junior review this morning.
It went spectacularly well. I got some great feedback, a couple hints about directions I should look into (fashion and product design) and was complimented on my presentation,and decorum.
If only they had actually used the decorum. That'd be amazing.
I love that everyone keeps telling me about the 18 different ways I could take my Illustration. There's a reason I chose Illustration, I can do whatever I want and jump around as needed. I think I'll always love books and will probably do quite a few, maybe even write some, but it's exciting to hear that my work would be great in other editorial venues. I love options and flexibility!

The art is for a target giftcard assignment, I have to work on color but otherwise its ready.
